Apply for a Fellowship

The Huntington Research Division administers one of the largest and most prestigious fellowship programs for the support of scholarship in the humanities in the United States. Every year approximately 150 fellowships are awarded to scholars from all over the world to conduct advanced humanities research using The Huntington’s collections.

The Research Department is now accepting Fellowship Applications for the 2025-2026 fellowship year for Long-Term Fellowships, Short-Term Fellowships, and Travel Grants/Exchange Fellowships from August 30, 2024 until 11:59 PM PST on November 15, 2024. 

The Huntington offers 15 long-term fellowships: 13 academic year fellowships for 9-11 months in residence, each with a stipend of $50,000, and 2 academic term fellowships for 4-5 months in residence with a stipend of $25,000.   
Approximately 130 short-term fellowships are available for one to three months, with a stipend of $3,500 per month.  
Six 1-month travel grants for study abroad are available for research that will be carried out in libraries or archives outside of the United States or Canada, with a $3,500 stipend. We also offer nine 1-month exchange fellowships with Corpus Christi, Jesus, Lincoln, and New Colleges, Oxford; Trinity Hall, Cambridge; Trinity College Dublin/Marsh’s Library; the University of Birmingham; the University of Durham; and the John Rylands Research Institute and Library at the University of Manchester. Depending on the institution, exchange fellows may receive either a stipend or room and board.

How to submit your fellowship application: 

1. Create an account by clicking on the green REGISTER button in the upper right and entering a username and password. 

2. Complete the online application following the Application Guidelines and uploading all required materials by the deadline 11:59 PM PST on Nov. 15, 2024. 

Please note: If you are using an academic email address and are not receiving emails from the Survey Monkey Apply system, please contact your University Information Technology administrator. In most cases, these differences arise from the firewalls erected by IT administrators.
